My son just bought 2005 Malibu which was listed as a 'classic'. I'll be helping him with car as he is not real experienced in mechanics. First step is to get a repair manual and looking at Haynes Manual at Amazon it says (book cover says) it covers GM Malibu- 2004 to 2007 but specifically Amazon note says it does not cover the 2004/2005 classic.
At ebay there is Haynes that book cover says Chevrolet Malibu 97 to 2003 and lists 2004 and 2005 Classic. What is the difference between 03 Malibu and 2005 classic. They seem to look the same. The registration just lists 2005 Chev. To be safe I will probably get the ebay manual but curious as to differences since the seller listed at a 2005 Malibu Classic. GM did confusingly have some naming crossover regarding the Malibu. Hopefully I can clear it up some!

From list above looks like the same but transmission different (2005 Classic = 4T40-E Vs 2005 Malibu 4T-45E) - seems odd 2004 Malibu with 45-E and 2005 Classic with 40-E).
No big deal either way. Wish they had dipsticks on the tranny of these. Had to buy used car without inspecting fluid state and level - Car Fax showed tranny fluid changed at 109k (has 110k now). Did not mention filter change but assume also done then.
I guess with no dipstick just have to trust they filled it correctly. I feel good about the tranny fluid at 109k since manual says not needed unless severe service. I would expect he will do at 50k intervals from now on anyway to be safe. His last car was 2002 Cavalier (OHV)I bought used and drove 40k and then gave to him that never burned ANY oil. Only car that I every owned that never burned any (and I have purchased a number of cars new) - so I think these Chevy knows how to build a 4 cyl engine.
